Tonight, I was honored to have seen an advance screening of the critically acclaimed movie Selma starring fellow Nigerian actor David Oyelowo as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. along side Oprah, Common, Wilkinson, Ejogo, just to name a few. Of course, better to take in the movie with such icon as Beverly Johnson. My dear friends, this is a movie for all ages and a historical one at that. The film chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. Director Ava DuVernay’s SELMA tells the story of how the revered leader and visionary Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his brothers and sisters in the movement prompted change that forever altered history.
Out in theaters Dec 25, on Christmas Day.
Later on Thursday, I will be attending an advance screening of Angelina Jolie’s movie “Unbroken” and will post my findings on my Facebook page shortly after 9pm. So be sure to be on the look out for that too. 😉
