Skiing In The Snowstorm

How did you spend your snowstorm day? I bet you had a cup of hot cocoa in your hands and watching the telly while some crazy people like me braved the storm to capture every bit of it from Times Square to watching Bari “skiing” in the village. I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I guess it is no secret by now that I must have been an Eskimo in my past life. Whenever there’s a snowstorm in NYC, I set out armed with my shutters like I did for the “Winter Wonderland” from last year. Here are some of the scenes spotted through my lens. Fashion: Fendi For A Break

OMG! It’s àwín!

Awin in its casing

Ahh… childhood memories took the best of me when I spotted this image in my facebook newsfeed few weeks ago. Naturally, my instinct was to find out where and how I could get it right here in the states. You see, this dried fruit (commonly known àwín”, “tamarind” in the English speaking Caribbean, “Black Tumbler”, “Black Velvet” or “tamarindo” in Spanish) as can be found mainly in West Africa. Shortly after posting it, many of my friends who also share the same sentiments wasted no time in commenting on the post. Luckily, my good friend Hawa Barry- Diallo (the organizer of Miss Guinea North America) inboxed me saying she would ship a box over, including some “Monkey Bread”. I couldn’t believe my luck! I have been licking and flicking since the package arrived! OMG! On that note, I offer my sincere thank you and prayers to my dear Hawa for coming to rescue. May her house never burn, may the heels on her shoes never break, may she live a long and healthy life with more money than she can spend. Well, you get the idea. I am very grateful! So what next? I am looking for yet another favorite. Remember “agbalumo”? Reach out to me please. Let’s discuss. 🙂

Mary Magdalene The Subway Dancing Queen

20131228_125352xTHIS is one of the many reasons why I LOVE NYC!!! There’s never a dull moment! I stumbled into “Mary Magdalene” in the subway station while on my way to get my hair done. As you can imagine, this little entertainment diverted my attention like every other passerby to record, donate money and commend him on his work. He racked up quite a few mulahs from just about everyone who stood to watch. It was somewhat original and different from what we jaded New Yorkers are used to seeing in underground entertainment which normally consist of musicians. “Mary” simply slapped on his favorite American Flag crystal studded sky scrapper high heel boots and got to work! Press the play button to see for yourself. You might learn a few dance moves. 🙂

After Christmas/Boxing Day Doorbuster Sale! WOW!

20131226_102120This year would mark the very first time that I dared to venture out at 5am, a day after Christmas to participate in the door buster sales! The “professionals” call it THE sale to check out while calling “Black Friday” held a day after Thanksgiving for amateurs. Well, I guess it all depends on what you’re buying. My first stop was at Macy’s by 530am where news crew had already set up shop to report about the mayhem and by 7am, I migrated up north to check out Bloomingdales before hitting the upmarket venue at Bergdorf Goodman by 9am. All the stores had eager customers waiting for the doors to open, -literally!

Unbeknownst to me, the REAL sale I should have paid attention to was at SAKS where they offered 70% off designer shoes till noon! I was almost in tears when I sashayed in by 1145am only to be told the shoe floor had closed for the day but will reopen at 1230pm long after the sale. I wasn’t having it. I pleaded with the security guy and declared that I had to have some drinks at the cafe located on the same floor. Of course he looked at me suspiciously while I pouted my lips and made a sad face. He relented and let me through much to the surprise of pissed off onlookers who hadn’t thought about that as an excuse to get in. When I got up there, it was bedlam. Overall, from the sale of the day, I made it home with a pair of Giuseppe Zanotti I had been eyeballing for weeks prior to the sale! One left in my size and the rest was history! Should come in handy for a fabulous New Year’s eve party! 🙂

White Christmas In NYC…Came Early!

1505269_10152128896699602_1233719564_nWhite Christmas came a little over a week early to New York with the down pour of fluffy soft white snow that brought out people from all works of life and faith to celebrate, dance and sing carols on the street! I’m not exaggerating. I will post a video shortly. Alas! The day also brought out many half drunk but super friendly Santas for the Santa Con celebration. The overall atmosphere in the city was festive to say the least. Did I mention the endless sightings of lovers kissing everywhere? I saw a few bended knees and shaky hands holding out a ring. It’s the season! Wish it could be like this everyday. I also ran into an Israeli pop star strutting in the snow. You have to watch the video posted on SHOEHOLICS to believe what she did. “WOW” is an understatement for that. Enjoy the series of pictures below captured with my camera. I hope you like them. Also check out my photo work from the snow storm earlier this year.
